Dear friends in Germany,

Let’s ramp up the pressure on every party to deliver clean energy, green jobs, and climate leadership. Sign up to be alerted about Avaaz campaign actions in your local area and help out with other campaign activities!

Wow! On Monday, thousands of Avaaz members around Germany called the CDU headquarters, asking for CDU participation in climate candidate forums run by our partners at Klima-Allianz. Thanks to this massive influx of calls, the CDU told many of us that they will be working to participate in upcoming forums in Mannheim, Essen, Stendal, and more.[1]

This week, we’ve seen what can happen when we really step up our campaigning: After Monday’s call-in campaign, CDU officials met with Avaaz on Tuesday — and yesterday Secretary Steinmeier accepted our climate petition at the Foreign Ministry. But to get climate leadership, green jobs, and clean energy onto every party’s agenda, we need to roll out even more ambitious plans for how we as German citizens can galvanise a „climate election“.

Avaaz’s Berlin Youth Action Factory is ready and eager to coordinate volunteers around Germany to attend candidate forums, hold media stunts, write blogs, and more — but first, we need thousands of German Avaaz members to actively express interest in getting more involved by signing up as volunteers. Click the link below to sign up as a volunteer (or get more information below the link) — it’s fast, it’s easy, and you’re not committing to anything other than receiving alerts about campaign actions in your local area.

The key elements of our ambitious campaign plan include:

  • Avaaz members will go to candidate appearances to tell candidates in person that Germans demand climate leadership.
  • We’ll use new media like Facebook to reach out to friends and family about clean energy and green jobs.
  • And on September 21, just 6 days before the election, we’ll join organizations and activists around the world in sounding a massive climate wake-up call, complete with thousands of flashmobs and rallies around the world and phone-in campaigns to every world (and German!) leader.

If we can pull this off, we’ll be doing something never before seen in German politics: A people-powered grassroots campaign, combining new technologies and tried-and-true tactics to make sure every party knows exactly what German voters expect of them on climate action and a new green economy.

If thousands of us can volunteer across Germany to make calls, attend town hall forums or show up at campaign stops of all parties — imagine the lasting impact we can have on this election cycle, the lead up to Copenhagen, and in the way climate change is viewed in the public debate. But we only have 23 more days. So click below now to get more involved:

Together, let’s make this an election to remember.

With hope,
Julius, Ricken, Taren, Paul, Anastasis, Sandra, Anna, Susanna, Niklas, Prosper, Catherine, Leon and the rest of the Avaaz Germany team

[1] For more detailed information about upcoming Klima-Allianz forums, including which candidates have been invited and have accepted, see the Klima-Allianz website.

(Early in our calling campaign, CDU staffers told some members that CDU candidates were attending most of the forums, based on an out-of-date version of this webpage which included CDU representatives who had been invited but not accepted. We then asked KlimaAllianz to update that webpage, and the CDU responses changed significantly — see the call log here: www.avaaz.org/de/germany_cdu_calls/.
